Auto ID Technologies
Auto-ID is the ability for a code on an asset, inventory or trade item to be input by machine into an information system. In any Auto-ID system, the key issues are:
1) System requirements These will include cost, volume or speed of marking or reading codes, size of items to code, durability, whether the system is closed (used only by one organisation) or open (where items need to be indentified by other organisations), whether the code can be read by camera in a line of sight, or will be hidden.
2) Most appropriate data format. It may be necessary to carry only a small amount of data in a bespoke form, or a need for larger data requirement in an open standard e.g. EAN-128.The amount of data will impact on coding technologies, and also ultimately marking technologies.
3) Most appropriate coding technology. It is possible to use standard bar codes, reduced space 2D codes, or even RFID, depending on the system requirements and constraints.
4) Most appropriate marking technology. For physically marked codes, there are a range of options from Ink-Jet printing to Laser or Dot-Peen impact marking in order of durability.
